Embassy of Japan is housed at Srimath R.G. Senanayake Mawatha (formerly called as Gregorys Road) in a residential building built during the colonial occupation with rich enchanting characteristics of British period architecture.
The Embassy occupied a 0.4 Ha. (approximately 1 Acre) of land.
In response to the growing demands of its mission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, in 2022, appointed Mohri, Architect & Associates alongside Mikaso as the local counterpart for the extension of the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka. This project was notable for its dual focus on conservation and new construction, particularly due to its heightened safety requirements.
The new embassy building was designed in compliance with the latest architectural trends of modern ‘state of art’ embassy building with office space, open meeting rooms, break terrace for staff etc. but with much consideration for the importance of the preservation of the original historical building for the activities such as public display, reading and multipurpose use.
The interior refurbishment carefully retained the charm of the British-period architecture, while the exterior maintained its original character. This successful blend of old and new stands as a testament to the collaboration between Japanese architects and their local counterparts in managing the design and construction with great sensitivity.
